Diagram of one path splitting two ways: into a single built-in block, or into a chain of three custom-built steps

Jay Biros, Founder. Checked against Fin, Gorgias and Zendesk help docs and pricing pages on October 29, 2026. Updated October 29, 2026.

Short answer: if you already run Intercom, Gorgias or Zendesk, start with the AI agent built into it. Fin, Gorgias AI Agent and Zendesk AI agents all answer from your help content, take configured actions in other systems, and hand off to your team inside the same helpdesk. A custom AI customer support chatbot makes sense when you have a requirement the built-in agent can't meet after you test it, not before.

This post covers what each built-in agent does today, what it costs as stated by the vendor, when a custom build is the better call, and a 5-step way to decide.

Who this is for: support leads and founders who run Intercom, Gorgias or Zendesk and are about to hire someone to build a custom RAG bot (a bot that answers from your own documents).

Plan needed: Fin is available on paid Intercom plans, or can run on your existing helpdesk. Gorgias AI Agent needs an AI Agent subscription and a Shopify store connected to Gorgias. Zendesk AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan.

What does a built-in AI agent already do?

Each of the three helpdesks ships an AI agent that covers the core of a typical custom bot request: answer from your knowledge, look things up or change things in other tools, and pass the conversation to a person. Here's how they compare, from each vendor's own docs.

Fin (on the Intercom helpdesk)Gorgias AI AgentZendesk AI agents

ActionsProcedures that connect to tools like Stripe, Shopify or your own systems through data connectors or MCPsOpt-in actions in connected tools, such as canceling an order, processing a return or updating a shipping addressActions and API integrations that read and write data in external systems
HandoffHands over when it can't resolve, the customer asks for a person, or an escalation rule appliesHands over when it can't confidently respond, hits a sensitive topic, detects frustration or the shopper asks for a personEscalation flow sets the message and whether the handoff goes to messaging or email

Bottom line: all three already do retrieval from your content plus actions plus handoff, the core of a typical custom bot request. The differences that matter are channels, where your knowledge lives, and how billing works.

What does Fin, Intercom's AI agent, cover?

Fin is the AI agent. The company behind it renamed itself from Intercom to Fin, and the helpdesk is still called Intercom. Fin runs natively in the Intercom helpdesk, and it can also run on top of another helpdesk such as Zendesk, Salesforce or Freshdesk.

  • Knowledge: Fin uses your Intercom articles and snippets plus external content. Public website pages re-sync once a week, and uploaded documents are usable within minutes.
  • Actions: Procedures let Fin follow multi-step processes with branching logic, and connect to your systems through data connectors or MCPs, with you controlling what data it can reach.
  • Handoff: Fin hands over when it can't resolve the question, the customer asks for a person, or an escalation rule or guidance applies.
  • Voice: Fin Voice answers phone calls. It connects to your existing phone system through call forwarding, or through SIP where your phone provider supports it (Intercom's account team turns SIP on). Intercom's help center says Fin Voice is currently limited to select customers working with Intercom's sales team, on workspaces hosted in the US, EU or Australia.

What does Gorgias AI Agent cover?

Gorgias AI Agent is built for ecommerce. You need an active AI Agent subscription and a Shopify store connected to Gorgias. It draws on your help center articles, website content, documents, guidance and Shopify data, and it needs at least one knowledge source before you can turn it on.

  • Channels: email, chat, SMS, Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
  • Actions: opt-in tasks in connected tools, like canceling an order or updating a shipping address. Actions added automatically from connected apps only run once you reference them in a skill or guidance, so you decide exactly when they can fire. Actions you build yourself can run on their own for now, and Gorgias says that changes by the end of the year.
  • Handoff: it always hands over when it detects frustration, gets a request for a human, or hits a sensitive topic, and you can't turn that off. On chat it asks the shopper to confirm before handing over by default, and it skips that step if the shopper asks for a human.

Example: a shopper on chat asks to change the shipping address on an order. If you've added the address action to a skill and the order hasn't shipped yet, AI Agent confirms the new address with the shopper and updates it in Shopify. If the shopper types "let me talk to a person" instead, it hands over to your team right away, with no confirm step.

What do Zendesk AI agents cover?

Zendesk AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan. They work on messaging, email (including API and web form) and voice, and they can take actions in authorized systems. Each channel has to be on your plan: on Support Team, AI agents for messaging need messaging, and voice AI agents need Zendesk voice on every plan.

  • Knowledge: a connected help center is searched live. External sources are searched as of the last sync, which Zendesk says usually happens every 24 hours.
  • Actions: actions and API integrations let the agent read and update data outside Zendesk during a conversation.
  • Handoff: the escalation flow sets what the agent says and whether the handoff goes to messaging or email. On messaging, a failed escalation reply covers the case where no one is available.

Watch out: Zendesk's migration guide says "each AI agent can interact on only one type of channel." So if you want AI on messaging and email, plan for two AI agents, one per channel. And if you still run an Essential AI agent, Zendesk says it will migrate it for you in January 2027, with some exceptions, so move it yourself first with Zendesk's migration tool.

How much do built-in AI agents cost?

All three bill the AI agent on outcomes or resolutions rather than per seat for the AI itself. Prices below are as stated on each vendor's site on October 29, 2026.

VendorHow the AI agent is billedWhat's not billed
Fin$0.99 per outcome, at most one per conversation. An outcome is a resolution (no further help asked after Fin's last answer) or a Procedure you've configured to end in a handoff that Fin completes. On another helpdesk: a $49 a month base plan that includes 50 resolutions, then $0.99 per outcome, and no seat costs.Conversations where Fin can't answer, fails an action, or the customer asks for a person. A reopened conversation's outcome is refunded.
GorgiasAI Agent is available on every plan, with an AI Agent subscription. When it resolves a ticket with no handover, you pay a ticket fee plus an automation fee. The cost of each depends on your subscription tier and shows on the Billing & usage page. The automation fee, if AI Agent hands the ticket to a person (ticket fee only). An interaction counts as automated only if no human is needed within 72 hours.
ZendeskBilled per automated resolution. Each current Suite and Support plan includes a set number per agent, or a dollar allowance per agent seat on Zendesk's newer resolution allowance model. The pricing page lists extra resolutions at $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay as you go.Requests escalated to a human. On accounts with resolution tiers, assisted escalations and contained resolutions don't count against the allowance.

Tip: all three give you a brake. Fin has spending limits and alerts, and Zendesk lets you pause features that use automated resolutions or pay overages when you reach your allowance. For more on how outcome billing works, see how AI agent pricing by outcome works and Zendesk AI resolution tiers.

When does a custom AI support bot make sense?

A custom build is the right call when a real requirement falls outside what the built-in agent can do. From our own work: every Intercom and Gorgias instance we have configured has measured above 35% containment (conversations the AI agent finished without a person stepping in). That's our track record, not a promise, and your ticket mix decides your number. So test the built-in agent first, then check these against the docs above before you scope anything.

  1. Your helpdesk has no AI agent that fits. If you're not on Intercom, Gorgias or Zendesk, look first at whether Fin can run on your helpdesk. If it can't, custom is a fair option.
  2. The bot has to live somewhere the agent doesn't deploy. For example, inside your own product with your own interface, in an internal tool for staff, or on a channel your helpdesk's agent doesn't list. Gorgias AI Agent's docs list no voice channel, and Zendesk voice AI agents need Zendesk voice.
  3. You have hard data or model rules. If legal or security requires a specific model, hosting region or data path that the vendor doesn't offer, a custom build lets you set those.
  4. The workflow logic doesn't fit. If you've tried Fin Procedures, Gorgias skills and actions, or Zendesk actions and the process still needs logic they can't express, custom code can carry it.
  5. The billing shape doesn't fit your volume. Outcome billing grows with usage. A custom bot swaps that for hosting, model usage and upkeep that you pay for. Run your own volume through each vendor's pricing page before you decide.

What you take on with custom: the retrieval pipeline, keeping content in sync, testing answers before each change, wiring the handoff into your helpdesk so agents see the full conversation, and maintenance when models change. Plan the handoff on day one, because the built-in agents already ship it.

When we do build custom, our AI builds handle chat, text and phone, and hand off to your team with the context attached.

How do I choose in 5 steps?

  1. List the questions. Pull your most common ticket types and mark which ones need data from another system, such as order status.
  2. Check the channel row. Confirm the built-in agent covers each channel you need, using the table above.
  3. Check the knowledge row. Confirm your content lives in a source the agent can read, or can be moved into one.
  4. Pilot one use case natively. Turn on the built-in agent for one ticket type with one action and a tested handoff.
  5. Write down the gap. If the pilot hits a limit you can name and cite, scope a custom build for that gap only.

FAQ

Is a custom RAG bot better than Fin, Gorgias AI Agent or Zendesk AI agents?

Not by default. All three already answer from your knowledge, take configured actions and hand off to people. A custom bot is better only when you have a requirement they can't meet, such as a channel, data rule or workflow they don't support.

Can Fin work if my helpdesk is Zendesk?

Yes. Fin works with other helpdesks, including Zendesk, Salesforce and Freshdesk. Fin's help center says the base plan for Fin with your helpdesk is $49 a month and includes 50 resolutions, then $0.99 per outcome, as of October 29, 2026.

Does Gorgias AI Agent answer phone calls?

Gorgias's AI Agent docs list email, chat, SMS, Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. Voice is not on that list as of October 29, 2026.

Can one Zendesk AI agent cover messaging and email?

No. In the current AI agent experience, each AI agent works on one type of channel, so messaging and email need two AI agents.

Do I pay when the AI agent hands off to a person?

Fin's help center says you're not billed if the customer explicitly asks to speak with a human, and its pricing page says you're not charged when a conversation is simply passed to your team without an outcome. A Procedure you've configured to end in a handoff is billed as an outcome when Fin completes it, so check how your Procedures end. Zendesk doesn't bill escalated requests as automated resolutions. Gorgias charges the ticket fee but not the automation fee when AI Agent hands over.
